Once again, All About Symbian seems to be one of the few sites actually giving us any updates on the Omnia HD. This time round they have the first of a three part preview on the phone discussing the general design and hardware. Some of the points we found most interesting is a quoted battery time of 4.3 hours when watching HD video, easily enough time to watch a whole film. Also, AAS are talking about a late-April release, whereas I thought it would be a late May release. It is quite lengthy preview and we’ve posted some of the key points after the break.

Key points from AAS Preview Part One:

  • The phones width means that prolonged one-handed usage, especially for those with small hands, is somewhat cumbersome.
  • Overall build quality feels very good with no noticeable squeaking or flexing.
  • The three physical keys are large, well defined and give good tactile feedback.
  • The AMOLED screen is brighter, uses less power, has a wider viewing angle and better contrast ratio than similarly sized LCD TFT screens. It looks absolutely fantastic, especially when displaying photos and other multimedia content.
  • The touchscreen uses capacitive technology, in contrast to Nokia’s N97 and 5800, which both use resistive technology. Capacitive screens are less accurate and will only work with a finger, rather than a finger-nail (it needs your electrons!).
  • Overall sound quality was very good; the device includes the DNSe 2.0 technology.
  • Battery rated at 15,00 mAh battery. Normal use should last 24 hours. HD recording time is quoted at 3 hours. Video playback time is quoted at 4.3 hours.
  • The OMAP 3 chipset effectively matches the performance of current netbooks – that’s a significant step on the road to mobile – laptop convergence. This means that the operating system and applications can run more quickly.
  • Release date should be late April.
