ZDNet’s latest ‘Clash of the Touch Titans’ article looks at the Omnia HD versus iPhone 3G. It’s worth mentioning that whilst they managed to spend some time with the Omnia HD at CTIA, they based much of their thoughts on the series of All About Symbian articles that we have already covered.
After looking at several different areas of the Omnia HD including the operating system and hardware, the author’s personal preference turns out to be the iPhone. Seems a bit of a biased opinion to me given that the he owns an iPhone currently and the Omnia HD isn’t even out yet! Anyway, these kind of articles are always subjective. He felt the iPhone was hard to beat given the seamless iTunes experience. Personally I don’t even use iTunes so this is no issue for me.
On the positive side, he said it was likely to be one of the best media touch-based phones released this year and that power users will love the S60 platform for multi-tasking, easy tethering etc. Concerns stemmed from the fact that the OS has not been designed for touch from the ground up along with the lack of optimised text entry keyboards.
Thanks Scot!

I get sick of reviewers/reporters who are secretly Fanboys… Here in the UK there is a magazine called CustomPC, and I keep upto date via RSS feed on their news, and 99% of their stories are based on Intel/Nvidia….
I am confused in one aspect. in the article, the authour stated that the video capability was at 30 fps. Does this mean that samsung can hopefully upgrade the software to render at 30 fps rather than the stated 24? or was he incorrect in his statement?
@Tech-Lova: Yeah, but the gadget world is full of Mac fanboys, so it’s no surprise. And it’s not like it matters, this phone will never be available on a major carrier, so it’s unlikely people interested in iPhone’s and at&t’s chains will be cross shopping this bad boy.
Out of interest, did the Samsung i8510 ever make it to a major wireless carrier in the US?
In the UK, it was limited to certain networks and didn’t appear on the likes of T-Mobile at all. I hope the same doesn’t happen with the Omnia HD.
@ soHD: As far as I know, it never did. Only at&t and T-Mobile run GSM in the ‘States, so it’s them or nobody.
An ultra-high-end set like this would never be considered because the amount of software work to effectively cripple all of the stuff they don’t want you having, and the sheer cost, makes it non-viable for US carriers.
Ah I see. I’ve not seen this crop up anywhere in the US yet, nor have I heard any rumours.
I did see it listed on the Mobile City Online website as an import for $799.99. Certainly not cheap.
