Samsung i8910 HD unbranded firmware (XXIE4)Samsung has released a new version of its firmware for the i8910 Omnia HD smartphone. We believe that this new XXIE4 firmware is only for unbranded handsets only, so UK Orange users won’t be able to try it out (although please let us know if it works!) Heading over to the Samsung Innovator dev-site is greeted by the following message:

“Samsung i8910HD firmware has updated! (XXIE4)
All Samsung i8910HD firmware has updated to the latest version for the open market.”

Before anyone gets too excited, we have been told that this new firmware version does not update the audio codec, it still runs the AMR codec unfortunately. The XXIE1 firmware is currently running on unbranded sim-free i8910 HD handsets.

We haven’t been made aware as to what changes this firmware offers over the current Orange version, but hopefully this should be made clear soon. The Orange handsets are using firmware (I8910XXIDD) dated from 6th May while this new I8910XXIE4 firmware is dated 18th May 2009.

Update: We have a screengrab of the new firmware running on the i8910 HD. Click through for a larger image.

Update 2: It looks like that Samsung has taken down the i8910 HD firmware from the developer site, whilst it was up this morning. No idea why , hopefully we’ll find out soon.

The URL posted under “Samsung Innovator” http://lab.innovator.samsungmobile.com/devices# Does not work.

How can I get the new firmware to my phone?

    Thanks

That site is a dev site so you don’t get the firmware from there. You have to install the PC Suite to get hold of it, but many Orange users are reporting that it doesn’t work (probably as it’s only for unbranded phones).

What’s interesting though is that the i8910 HD seems to have been removed from that dev link, whilst it was up earlier on!

Can someone with an open I8910 try that?
Because from the pics posted here it just seems that they have been updated on Lab.dev to the firmware that should also be preinstalled on most of the SIM-free models and nothing else. (They first had a firmware from February)
The first picture here was taken from Lab.dev I suppose. (look at the white borders left and right and at the colours of the Options and Exit button. It looks exactly like the compression used in Lab.dev)

I have an Orange branded handset and just checked my firmware version after reading this article.

M phone reports that it has:

    Software version I8910BVIE7 dated 18/05/2009
    Custom version I8910RAIE4 dated 15/05/2009

So I’m not not sure if I should go for the debranded software mentioned in the other article or not?
