AMR-NBThere has been much furore over the audio codec used whilst video recording. The AMR-NB codec at an 8,000Hz sampling rate means that HD video recording is combined with sub-standard sound quality. Samsung has said that it is using the AMR codec as it provides the best balance when recording HD video, without stressing the OMAP3 CPU too heavily. Whilst this is understandable, it is hard to understand why the phone uses this same AMR codec when recording at lower resolutions.

Up until now, Samsung has not communicated clearly whether a fix for this is on the agenda. Some of the comments made in the Samsung Innovator forum (which is meant to be for developers) have been open to interpretation. However, it seems that this audio problem is now being “escalated” to a number of divisions within Samsung, following complaints.

Ben, who is a Samsung developer on the Innovator forum, has confirmed that the AAC issue has been escalated “through the development team to understand the problem, through the engineering organisation to try to understand whether this is a defect or is by design, escalated through the management side to alert them to the need to plan for firmware updates, escalated through the management side to alert them to the damage this issue is causing.”

Now, this doesn’t mean a fix is definitely on the way. After all, the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 uses the same AMR codec and this has never been upgraded in firmware updates up until now. However, it certainly is encouraging that Samsung is starting to listen to its consumers. Fingers crossed, that an update is planned and hopefully not too far away.

They better fix it… But my thoughts are that they will eventually because of all the feedback.

  2. I hope they do fix it. It really is a deal-breaker for me, and if they implement a change, that deal-breaker is removed. I’d like that because I did want the phone.

They wont fix it, people were complaining before the phone was even launched every professional review mentioned the bad audio MONTHS before the phone was ever released, Ben only going to pass the info to the developers but guess what? they already knows that problem but they decided to stick with AMR audio for god knows why and said in public that AMR bring the best quality to there phone and best audio quality for capturing human talk which is as BS of course

inov 8 was so advanced yet it still use AMR, same with omnia HD, Get NOKIA N97 or wait for Idou(Satio) samsung failed, if they wanted to fix it they would announce that Better audio is COMING in future firmware but right now all what they are saying is “we will look into it” which is marketing BS to let you buy the phone which i wont fall for plus i already bought N97 little too late samsung, lack of NAM 3g was ok to me, but audio quality where you cant hear anything is not acceptable , i know at least 4 Real life people who wanted Omnia HD but after i told them about the audio problem they decided to stick with there current phones (K800i/N95/iphone)

Word of mouth samsung, you should pay attention to it if you knows how business work

Plus for people who wants to use the DNLA Function with omnia HD and there HDTV or PS3/ETC
you cant almost every DNLA device at the market doesn’t support the AMR audio so you will watch videos in your TV with no audio lol

Prove here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDsBlE15i0c samsung fucked up there phone big time

  5. Tech Lova says:

Samsung are P’ing me off way too much now… My Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB HDD has gone crazy and now I’ve been waiting over a month for them to sort out my HDDs problem, and now, my new Samsung Omnia HD/i8910HD has got a million bugs with the firmware, and its audio codec is cr*p (and thats just being polite…). This is the last product that I will ever buy from Samsung until they sort out their customer support.

  6. Irongoat says:

hmm all these things you guys telling me that are bad bout this fone… especially Tech Lova telling me there is bugs and stuff.

should i cancel my i8910 HD that i ordered from GERMANY and cost me an arm and a leg?

  7. TOM says:

    To irongoat
I didn’t hear of any worthy bugs with the omnia hd its super phone and ahead of its time in many ways
If you dont care about video capture function or watching videos on your TV via DNLA or you always carry video camera with you then this is the best phone you can get

But for people who cares about the stuff i mentioned there is no way anyone is getting the omnia HD, sharing video files with friends people will be turned off by the bad audio

  8. @ TOM: Yeah, this is a big issue. One of the whole points of this is sharing videos, photos, and audio with friends online.

Moreover, I don’t care that I can carry a Flip recorder or something similar. I’m paying a premium for the whole package. I will not pay a premium for a flawed package. And pay I would, considering the Innov8 still sells for over $600US. I’m sorry. Not a chance.

If they lower the price, then it’s a possibility, but not until then.

TOM said “plus i already bought N97″

    Aw, I’m sorry. :(

what tom said is absolutely on point im bettin my ass off they will never ever fix it ..they have got the amr license under their belt and probably wanna push it and use it..theres no other logical explanation why samsung would do something stupid like this

everyone knows its not a technical hardware restriction from the processor..its samsungs own stupid decision

costumers maybe can hope for sumbody smart enough or skilled enough or is willing to put time into this issue ( maybe a private user ) to find any working solution to improve the audio quality but thats about it im not payin 500-600 for all in all nice device ….alone of the fact how samsung acts to their possible buying mass

i dont want to support their lameness by buyin the phone even tho like i stated its a pretty nice phone ….except from recording audio which i thought would be atleast decent to go along with the good camera…….

samsung doesnt even offer u a better audio in lower resolution recording which also would be acceptable for me ..but noooooooo
