Battle of the giants: i8910 HD pitted against Nokia N97The Nokia N97 has been one of the most eagerly awaited handsets to launch this year. Today, marks the day that the Nokia N97 is officially launched here in the UK. For those of you trying to decide between the i8910 Omnia HD and the Nokia N97 then you might want to check out Part One of My-Symbian’s Samsung i8910 Omnia HD review.

The first part of the review covers the hardware element of the phone and it is well worth a read, even for current owners of the phone. It covers the processor, memory, camera, video, screen, GPS and battery life. The first two bits (processor & memory) are covered in particular depth and what makes it quite interesting is the comparison to the Nokia N97, which is also a S60 5th Edition phone.

A few tests were run comparing both phones. When looking at the processor, both phones were tested with the Speedy Go! benchmark utility. The result is presented in the video below and to be honest I was dumbfounded just how quickly the i8910 runs through the graphic tests, compared to the N97. Also, the whole test finishes 43 seconds faster on the i8910 over the N97. Not something I would have expected, given that the N97 is Nokia’s flagship.

When looking at RAM, it’s no surprise to see that the i8910 HD (256MB) wins out over the N97 (128MB) due to it having double the RAM. As the Nokia N97 uses a more advanced home screen with widgets compared to the Nokia 5800 XM, only 38-49MB is left free compared to 58MB for the 5800 XM. Putting this into context, the i8910 Omnia HD has 140MB of free operating memory when the system is fully loaded. See the result below.

RAM between Omnia HD and N97

The i8910 HD continues to shine when looking at GPS performance. My-Symbian found that the i8910 HD managed to fix onto a signal much quicker than the N97 and 5800 XM. The video below shows just how quickly the i8910 HD locks onto a signal as well as seeing more satellites than the N97.

It’s rather battle of the giant, since the N97 is meerley a poor joke :) )

This results are not at all suprising. We all knew that the i8910 had a far superior spec to the n97. The real winner will be decided by the ultimate functionality of the phone. Im already worried by the lack of apps supported by the i8910 when the work fine on the n97 and the 5800.

As a new owner (and soon to be FORMER owner) of a new N97, I can confirm these numbers DO mean something. The N97 performs on only a manageable level if you turn off all the home screen widgets and use large apps one at a time. Having a larger variety of apps is not an advantage to the N97 if it doesn’t have the hardware to run the apps properly, much less simultaneously with other apps.

If anybody’s willing to trade their new i8910 for a white N97, please contact me. If I can’t swap it for an i8910, it goes back next week.

Totally agree with qwerty : “It’s rather battle of the giant, since the N97 is meerley a poor joke”
Have the Omnia HD and … damned it’s a fast thing. My only complain is abt text input; but that is related to s60 v5 itself; I find it’s a pain entering text on the device (previously had an E90)

Although the i8910 is superior to the N97 in some areas such as the processing power, the memory or the camera, this test is biasted. This can in particular be seen on the GPS test. Whilst the Samsung is running on a 3G connection and is sending/receiving data and therefore most probably using AGPS, the Nokia is running on a GSM connection and therefore does not have this for lock times crucial advantage.

This is not to say that the i8910s GPS is not as good as the N97’s. I am merely pointing out that this test is very one sided as it points out the Samsung’s advantages only.
