3D Task SwitcherNearly a week after Samsung released the Russian XEII1 firmware update, the company has released a new XXII1 update for Italian handsets. The similarities between both code names is not a coincidence – from what I can tell this new update (dated 7th September) is near enough identical to the Russian firmware.

I upgraded to this new firmware from IG2 yesterday and am enjoying it so far. You end up with a new 3D Task Switcher (a carousel showing opening apps) – it’s certainly not needed, but it sure looks fancy. There is also a Grid View of open apps if you prefer it to remain simple.

Other changes include a new zoom icon for the browser. You can also now zoom in/out of pictures in MediaBrowser. It’s good to know that the frustrating stop bug in the browser has also been fixed. The dial pad also sports ‘abc’, ‘def’ lettering on numbers now too.

From what I can tell, the update has made no change to the frame rate of HD video recording (you still get AAC audio though). There is also no App Store icon, despite the store launching shortly (Monday 14th September). A quick video tour of the new firmware is attached after the jump.

Note: In the video, I’ve said that the new firmware offers an improved keyboard by increasing the spacing between keys. However, on comparing screencaps, I can’t notice any difference in keyboard from the IG2 firmware.

    Great video Tej,

but when will SOHD actually review the handset?

  2. soHD says:

We plan to review it in parts, as it makes no sense for us to do one all-encompassing review.

Unfortunately, other commitments has meant that there hasn’t been the time to do it right now. Don’t worry though, it is coming!

Cheers for keeping us informed, & your diligence in continuing to do so, especially so long after the phones been released.
Myself, and I’m sure many others on this site appreciate your efforts :)

Only Russian and Italian firmware update? How about other firmware? Like mine, I bought it here in the UAE so it will probably have an “Arab” firmware(my firmware is I8910JVIF6)? Any update for us?

Btw, great site! Keep it up!

  5. Chappas says:

Oh thought you might wanna know, in ‘motion settings’ there’s now options for silencing music and silencing videos.
Don’t think they were there before :P

I waited so long for this, feel a little bit disappointed

    Well, it’s a nice shot but …
    – Web browser still crashes from time to time
    – When in browser, sometimes, when swiping finger, it launches the 3DNav app ?!!!
    – When zooming in the web browser, the small overview windows that appears is really annoying when reading text
    – Multitab support is still so poor on s60 browser
    – When activating AntiShake in cam apps, taken pictures are *OVER* contrasted
    – Have the feeling that operaMini still hangs from time to time (less than previously, agreed)
    – Unable to use modem if the an app is already connected on the device
    – And unable to connect on the device if already using modem
    – Must first manually close all connection before switching 3G/2G, annoying
    – Web browser do not automatically go fullscreen once the page is fully loaded
    – I personally miss portrait mini qwerty keyboard that can be found on 5800
    – Each time VideoPlayer starts, it rebuilds its library, why not maintain a cache same as mp3 player
    – MP3 player does not adapt to selected theme + black/pink color ugly
    – MP3 player : no customizable equalizer, only presets
    – When listening to MP3 and activate cam, music stops -> Unable to listen to music while taking photos
    – I personally don’t care abt video rec but several sources reported frame drop unfixed
    – No kinetic scrolling

I hope all those come fixed in coming firmwares ….

I feel that this update is only about 3D taskswitcher and better battery (confirmed for me)

  8. NeidRider says:

I actually feel like battery life is degraded, compared to ig2… anybody else experience this?

  9. fotzenlecker says:

i’m experiencing longer battary life since upgrading to italien xxii1

    Hi,
I have firmware XXIG2 but when I run PC Studio to update the firmware, it says my I8910 is up to date.
    Any idea please ?
    Thanks.

  11. uk786 says:

    Hey Tej,

just found out that you have the HTC HERO on ya as-well and that you run the HTCHEROBLOG,

now I am interested in getting the i8910 or the HTC Hero but I don’t know which one to go for, the HTC Hero is availble everywhere whiles the i8910 has limited availability so the HTC Hero seem like the realistic choice huh!

So seeing that you have both handsets which one would you recommend? or which is better?

  12. Tim says:

    hey

does anyone knows if there is a site where i can download that update ?

after a hour the pc studio update is still searching my phone for the current update version

    Thanks in advance
