Battle of the giants: i8910 HD pitted against Nokia N97The Nokia N97 has been one of the most eagerly awaited handsets to launch this year. Today, marks the day that the Nokia N97 is officially launched here in the UK. For those of you trying to decide between the i8910 Omnia HD and the Nokia N97 then you might want to check out Part One of My-Symbian’s Samsung i8910 Omnia HD review.

The first part of the review covers the hardware element of the phone and it is well worth a read, even for current owners of the phone. It covers the processor, memory, camera, video, screen, GPS and battery life. The first two bits (processor & memory) are covered in particular depth and what makes it quite interesting is the comparison to the Nokia N97, which is also a S60 5th Edition phone. Omnia HD GPSOne area which has been a bit light on coverage in recent previews is how the Samsung i8910 Omnia HDs GPS functionality fares. HDBlog.it has come up trumps here, releasing an excellent video which shows how quickly the Omnia HD can lock onto a GPS signal both from indoors as well as in the car.

They compare the Omnia HD against the Samsung i8510 INNOV8 and it’s impressive to see how quickly the i8910 can lock onto a signal whilst indoors. It latches onto 9 satellites in just a few seconds, whilst the INNOV8 finds none even after a minute or so. This may have something to do with the Omnia HD using a different GPS chipset compared to the INNOV8, although I haven’t been able to find out exactly what chipset the Omnia HD uses.

The video then goes to show a demonstration in a car which highlights that the Omnia HDs display remains bright and clear whilst the volume is loud enough to be heard whilst driving. Check out the video after the break. Read the rest of this entry »
